North Texas (18-15) punched a ticket to the championship game of the Women's Basketball Invitational with a 56-53 win over the North Alabama Lions (21-9) Friday night. With nine players scoring, the Mean Green used a balanced team effort to hold off the Lions.
The victory did not come easy as the teams were neck and neck for most of the game. North Texas scored first with a layup from junior post Anisha George, but the Lions responded quickly. There were three ties in the first quarter.
The Mean Green entered the second period with a 17-15 lead. They had their biggest lead late in the second quarter, 28-21, before North Alabama closed the gap again. North Texas led 28-25 at halftime.
The slim advantage the Mean Green earned in the first half sustained the team throughout the second. The teams scored 15 points each in the third quarter and 13 apiece in the fourth.
With the triumph, North Texas will face the winner of tomorrow's Campbell at Appalachian State in the championship game next week.
