Four teams compete to advance to the championship
MILWAUKEE, WI — From sixteen to four. It took less than a week for the original 16-team field of the 2017 WBI to be whittled down to the Final Four after the first two rounds were completed on Monday (Mar. 20). The two semifinal matches will be held Thursday (Mar. 23).
In the first WBI semifinal UNC Greensboro of the Southern Conference will host Milwaukee from the Horizon League. UNCG will bring a 19-14 record into the contest after beating Charleston Southern 45-37 in the first round and Brown 87-84 in the WBI second round. The Panthers of the Horizon League own a 22-11 mark thanks to an 81-53 win over SIU and a 67-57 victory at Saint Francis in the first two rounds. Thursday’s game will tip at 7 p.m. at Fleming Gym on the UNC Greensboro campus.
The second semifinal will take place at Tudor Fieldhouse on the Rice University campus in Houston, TX. The 7 p.m. game will feature the host Rice Owls versus the University of Idaho. The Owls of Conference USA will bring a 20-13 record into the semifinal after a 73-72 win over Lamar in round one and a 73-63 victory over UTRGV in round two. Idaho sits at 19-14 on the season with a 64-57 opening round victory over Utah State and a 74-67 win versus fellow Big Sky Conference member Eastern Washington.
The two semifinal winners will square off for the 2017 WBI Championship this weekend. The championship game time and date will be set once the semifinals are complete. Check www.womensbasketballinvitational.com for more information.
