Louisiana Holds Off Weber State In Historic 2016 WBI Championship Game

MILWAUKEE, WI — Two, 23+ win teams. Leads changing hands time and time again. Great players making great plays. Two overtimes. It was all that and then some in the 2016 WBI Championship game which saw Louisiana defeated Weber State 87-85 in double overtime on Saturday (Mar. 26). The win marked the second consecutive WBI crown for the Ragin’ Cajuns after posting a 52-50 win over Siena in the 2015 title tilt.

Senior guard Keke Veal led Louisiana with 32 points in her final game for the school. Fellow senior Kia Wilridge added 17 points and 11 rebounds, as did sophomore forward Simone Fields. The win gave the Cajuns 25 wins on the season, matching a school best mark set in 2006-07.

Weber State enjoyed a record season in 2015-16 and finished with a program best 23-12 record after the hard-fought game on Saturday. The Wildcats of the Big Sky Conference defeated New Mexico, North Dakota and USC Upstate on their way to the championship game.

Junior guard Deeshyra Thomas led the way for the Wildcats with 25 points while senior Brittney Dunbar finished with 23 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Veal was named the WBI Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Fields and Wilridge. Thomas and Dunbar also earned all-tournament accolades along with Brittany Starling from USC Upstate and Nikki Arbanas from Youngstown State.
