Eight Teams Still Alive After WBI First Round
Six conferences represented heading into second round
MILWAUKEE, WI — One overtime game, a two-point contest, and three other close finishes highlighted the first round action in the 2016 WBI. Eight teams advanced to the WBI second round which begins on Saturday (Mar. 19).
Western Illinois made a layup with 0.3 seconds left in overtime to beat in-state rival Southern Illinois 99-97 on Thursday. The Leathernecks will now travel to USC Upstate on Mar. 19 for a 7 pm contest. Upstate advanced to the second round with a thrilling 71-69 road victory at Northern Kentucky.
Weber State posted an upset road victory thanks to a 75-67 win in Albuquerque at New Mexico and will now travel to Grand Forks, ND for a second round game with the University of North Dakota. UND advanced thanks to a comeback home victory over Grand Canyon University, 57-51. The Weber State-North Dakota game is set for Sunday (Mar. 20) at 7 pm.
The defending champion, University of Louisiana, won its fifth straight WBI game with a first-round, 69-54 home victory over fellow Cajun State rival Northwestern State. The Ragin’ Cajuns will stay in Lafayette for the second round and will host Stetson on Saturday (Mar. 19) at 7 pm. The Hatters of the Atlantic Sun Conference moved on with an 89-54 victory over McNeese State.
In the Northeast, Youngstown State advanced with a 67-60 home win over Stony Brook while UMBC defeated Fairfield, 61-49 to move to the second round. Stony Brook will now travel to Youngstown, OH for the second round game which is set for Saturday (Mar. 19) at 2 pm.
